IN MEMORY OF THE GREAT WART (2500 BC – 2050 AD)

The business of art is no different to the business of war

The supply of guns and guitars long outstripped the demand for songs and land

Words sharpen the swords
Tears oil the tank wheels

There is more than what we can chew, but it is controlled by the few, and so many die with nothing to eat

Occupied land, like a recorded song
Past sorrow captured. Immortal voices echo memories of scorched earth

In business, art is like war. It gives meaning to life. Experience to take down to the grave. Community to share post-traumatic stress with. United against a common enemy

The business of art is like the business of war. There is money changing hands, child soldiers and blood-thirsty career psychopaths. There is trauma and despair, depression, suicide and most of all – pride.

The constant lying and ringing in the ear
If we just secure the next round of funding, victory is near!

Martyrs who believe in killing and dying for an abstract cause. Blind to suffering, entertained by pain. Drugs and alcohol numb the brain. Eardrums throbbing from the constant noise

Music is the weapon of choice, electrically amplified machines with higher moral ground. Art or die!
Fight for the Flag and the Brand! You are either with us or against us!

The ballet, operas, orchestras, theatre, dance companies and festivals of all sizes and shapes are the brigades in the army of the arts.
Well-funded, secure jobs, expertise in excellent execution, and no tolerance for mediocracy

The strategists, brand worriers, work overtime behind the scenes to market the cause. It is always for the greater good. Bring in the marching band for the prosperity and growth of the Brand!

On the front line, brainwashed artists and production personnel remain focused on the mission – Conquer the heart! Spread the word of the Arts!

In art business like war, there are uniforms and ranks, hierarchies and propaganda campaigns, business cases, diplomacy, and nepotism

On the other side of the fence, the enemy, the freedom fighters, the oppressed, the terrorists, the grassroots and the underground, the boy who breached the copyrights of birthday songs. The pirates of the internet and grandmothers knitting designer scarfs, the bedroom DJ ripping Kanye West, the YouTube cats who steal the views and likes from real creators

Terrorists. How dare they? seeking art with no brand? No attribution? Free?
If they’ll have their way, chaos will ensue

Our great civilisation would not have come this far without declaring the intellect as property. Without the right to copy, without the tight control of knowledge

If you want to make an omelette you must keep your chickens alive

If the business is removed from war
All that remains is cowardice violence and cruelty

But what if the business, is removed from the art?

If peace comes, and war art business is no longer needed, if people again sing for each other without selling tickets and merchandise, if a painting is again just an expression of a moment in time, free from the walls of the gallery, what will be the fate of all the executives, managers, art directors, choreographers, producers, technicians, coordinators, financial advisers, marketing and PR experts, the steering committees, boards, greedy entrepreneurs, selection panels, designers, personal assistants, administrators and career artists?

A big monument will be built in the main square, engraved with large words and swords for all to admire and see:

IN MEMORY OF THE GREAT WART (2500 BC – 2050 AD)

“LEST WE FORGET THE HEROES WHO SERVED THE COUNTRY AND MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE. THEIR BLOOD WAS NOT SPILLED FOR NOTHING. ONLY GOD KNOWS HOW ALL OF THIS GOT STARTED, BUT WE PROMISE TO SHOW THEM HOW IT IS GOING TO END
WITH SPECTACLE, WITH BELLS AND WHISTLES, IN FIREWORKS AND EXPLOSIONS, WE WILL BOMB THE ENEMY WITH OUR BEATING DRUMS. WE WILL FIGHT FOR PEACE. WE WILL FUCK FOR VIRGINITY. WE WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES”.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
